Sweet and Spicy Wings

If you’re like me, you love a good chicken wing! I am always trying to come up with my own ways to make a new sauce and to make then healthier I do not like to fry the wings because that just adds a level of fat you can do without.

Ingredients

-16 wing pieces (8 whole wings)

-1/2 cup Sriracha sauce

-1/4 cup Honey

-1/4 cup Agave Nectar

-Salt and Pepper to taste

Directions

1.       If you have whole wings divide then into 2 pieces and discard the wing tips.

2.       Season the wings with salt and pepper

3.       Bake at 350 degrees on a baking rack(on top of a cookie sheet) for 30 minutes flipping half way

4.       Combine Sriracha, Honey and Agave in a large bowl add cooked wings to the bowl of sauce coating the wings completely, place them back on the rack and bake for 10 minutes  then baste with left over sauce, flip after another  10 minutes and baste again. Cook for 10 more minutes.

Enjoy!

**Tip::line your baking sheet with aluminum foil so that cleaning is easy, they sauce will be sticky.**

More Than Just Food

“Just as food is needed for the body, love is needed for the soul” – Osho

On this blog I focus a lot about food and how to be healthier in terms of what you eat and the things your put in your body. The truth is though; there are a lot of factors that contribute to your overall health. I am going to focus on three main aspects of people’s lives that often have a chain reaction to their physical health.
First is your career/job, does your job produce a lot of stress for you, which makes you stress eat, or so tired that you don’t have time to do anything else. Are you unhappy, try to find ways to do things you enjoy at work. Play music if that is possible, or if you have the ability to incorporate projects or things you’re passionate about into the work you already do. If you are not happy, look for new jobs that will fulfill what you love to do and the passion behind it, while you are in that transition try finding volunteer opportunities to make you happier.
Second would be physical activity. I have talked about this, but just as a reminder, you need to try to get some physical activity into your day. It is not only beneficial to your physical health, but also to your mental health as well. A short walk can work wonders.  “Scientists have found that regular participation in aerobic exercise (cardio) has been shown to decrease overall levels of tension, elevate and stabilize mood, improve sleep, and improve self-esteem. Even five minutes of aerobic exercise can stimulate anti-anxiety effects.” (ADAA.org)
Lastly we will touch on the relationships in your life. This refers to any relationship in your life including, marriage, family, friendships etc. As with your job, if relationships stress you out they might make you stress eat and that is usually never good for you food. My personal rule to relationships is, if it’s not bringing you something productive/positive (happiness, inspiration, love, etc.) then you need to reevaluate what the relationship is doing to you and your life. I don’t believe you need to start cutting people off but a serious conversation with those you consider important might need to be had if they are not bringing you what you think you need. Also a good positive relationship with yourself is very important. You need to love yourself and know your wants, what makes you happy and how to truly enjoy your own company to be able to give of yourself in other relationships.
These are all things I have learned in my health coaching program. I firmly believe in more than just food making you healthy and happy. I hope you take this information and apply what you need to your lives.

Longevity

On Sunday while grocery shopping with my roommate we came across this lady, in line in front of us, who mentioned to the cashier that she was 97. We were amazed at how great she looked to be 97! It made me start to wonder, how had she done it? Did she eat well growing up and in her younger days, was she active at some points? I know food in general has changed through the years, and our habits have also changed. In a day and age when health issues and obesity are so relevant and in the front of a lot of people’s minds it is very refreshing to see someone that age up and active.  Also now a days one or both parents in the house work full time, so no one is probably home to cook meals like they used to, so something fast and probably less healthy is sometimes a must.  We need to start thinking of ways to make healthy and better choices for ourselves and our families, because the fact that for the first time ever kids are NOT expected to live longer than their parents. I am NOT okay with that fact!

This also made me think about what foods makes you live longer and have proven to make you healthier. I did some research and here is what I found.

-Leafy Greens:: Good source of fiber (fiber helps lower risk of diabetes and heart disease)
-Olive Oil:: Does not cling to arteries like other saturated fats and oils (also goes great with leafy greens)
- Flax Seed:: Healthy source of fiber (ground flax seed is easy to add to so many foods and smoothies)
-Oatmeal:: Helps to get cholesterol out of your system
-Tea:: Good way to boost antioxidant levels (green tea is the best, but black and white teas also do it)
